ZAO Festivals - Whitepaper (draft v0.3)
ZAO Festivals
The in-real-life arm of The ZAO. Festivals are where the community and its artists show up in person - the way The ZAO returns value to artists in the physical world, not just on-chain.
The Physical World Matters
On-chain tools return profit, data, and intellectual property rights to artists. Festivals return something the internet cannot: presence, crowd energy, a night that happened. They convert online community into real relationships and give artists a stage in the world they live in.
The ZAO spans multiple production lanes - live-traded music battles (WaveWarZ), creative game tournaments (ZABAL Games), and metaverse events (COC Concertz in Stilo World). ZAO Festivals are the physical counterpart, proving the entire ecosystem can return value in multiple dimensions simultaneously.
The Umbrella
ZAO Festivals is not a single event. It is an operational umbrella for real-world music and culture events run by and for The ZAO community. Each festival under it can have its own format, budget, and organizing team, but they share three things: community ownership, artist focus, and ties back to the broader ZAO ecosystem.
Festivals are structured as community-run efforts with distributed teams across Operations, Finance, and Design. They use open-source sponsorship mechanics (Fractured Atlas 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsorship, on-chain payment splits via 0xSplits, and crypto-native fundraising via Giveth and Mirror). Some events tie into cultural calendars (Art Basel, NFT NYC, Maine Craft Weekend).
Past and Upcoming
ZAO-PALOOZA (April 2024, New York City). First ZAO in-real-life meetup, tied to NFT NYC 2024. Twelve artists performed[4]; the event broke even[4]. A Manifold collectible was minted as proof of participation. This was the proof-of-concept that showed the community could organize live.
ZAO-CHELLA (December 6, 2024, Miami)[4]. Ten artists, set during Art Basel Miami Week[4]. Organized by AttaBotty and DaNici[4]. Run-of-show: 4pm networking, 6pm WaveWarZ LIVE rematch battle on stage, 7pm feature performances, 11pm close. Featured AR art installations and trading cards. Sponsored by Student $LOANZ Token[4]. Streamed and captured as content. Instagram profile @zaofestivals grew to 246 followers and 65 posts as of June 2026.
ZAOville (July 2026, Washington DC metropolitan area)[3]. A day-party artist showcase at Dcoop's residence, organized in collaboration with his VT collective. Mid-size event (86 of 100 RSVPs confirmed as of late May 2026[6]). Lineup: Dcoop (opener), Ashley, Eleven, John Clark, Profit, and Lion's Den (headliner). Features a viral content window with peak day-party energy (3-4:30pm), outdoor music performances (6-8pm), and a close with fire-spin light show and glow-stick pool experience. Serves as a dry run for content capture and production workflows ahead of ZAOstock. Dcoop raised $1,000 seed funding via a hackathon win[3].
ZAOstock (October 3, 2026, Ellsworth, Maine)[1]. The flagship festival and the event the entire 2026 production lane is built around. Community-run music and culture festival with a budget in the low five figures (estimates range $5-25k)[7]. Tied into the Art of Ellsworth and Maine Craft Weekend cultural calendar[1]. Distributed team structure with dedicated Operations, Finance, and Design rosters. Announced partners include Heart of Ellsworth (venue and Maine Craft Weekend promotion), Fractured Atlas (501(c)(3) fiscal sponsorship), Black Moon Public House (after-party venue), and Wallace Events (tent rental and weather backup)[2]. ZAOstock is expected to graduate into its own repository and operational structure as it matures.
Operations & Structure
Team Model. ZAOstock established the template in April 2026. Three departments organize the work:
- Operations Production, logistics, artist coordination, day-of execution. Led by Zaal with AttaBotty as second. Members include production experts (FailOften), performing artists (Hurric4n3Ike, Dcoop), community bridge builders (Swarthy Hatter), and local connectors (Steve Peer, 37 years in Ellsworth music scene).
- Finance Fundraising, budget management, sponsorship pipeline, grants. Led by Zaal with Candy as second. Includes grant specialists (Tyler Stambaugh), community fundraising leads (Ohnahji B), and sponsorship experts who access impact-fund channels like Milk Road (Candy's connection, reported $10-25k per send).
- Design Visual identity, installations, digital assets, live visuals. Led by DaNici with Candy as second. Members include Blender artists (DaNici), branding specialists (Candy - WaveWarZ brand lead), live-visual performers (FailOften), and music production designers (AttaBotty).
Funding & Sponsorship. Festivals use a layered fundraising stack:
- Fiscal Sponsorship. Fractured Atlas, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit[2], provides tax-deductible sponsorship containers so corporate sponsors receive compliance benefits.
- Crypto-Native Fundraising. Giveth (decentralized donor platform, open-source crypto donation platform) and Mirror (on-chain fundraising posts, acquired by Paragraph May 2024 but continues operation)[2] for community donations. Cask or Gitcoin ALLO for grants.
- Direct Sponsorship. Outreach to local businesses, impact funds, and Web3 projects aligned with artist values (e.g., Student $LOANZ Token sponsored ZAO-CHELLA).
- Artist Payment Splits. 0xSplits for transparent, on-chain distribution of ticket revenue and sponsorship proceeds directly to performing artists - no intermediary.
- Attendance Tokens. POAPs (Proof of Attendance Protocols) minted for each attendee, creating a verifiable, persistent record and digital collectible.
Distribution & Marketing. Festivals coordinate across channels: live calendar on thezao.xyz, Farcaster community updates (the /zao channel), Instagram @zaofestivals, and direct community messaging (Telegram, Discord). Content is captured and posted to amplify reach across the ZAO ecosystem.
Technical Infrastructure. Events are documented with full livestream via ZAO OS (mandatory for ZAOstock and recommended for others). Performances are recorded for post-event content, POAPs are minted and distributed to attendees, and on-chain settlement happens via 0xSplits within days of the event closing.
Track Record & Growth
Past Events (2024). Two fully executed events with documented outcomes: ZAO-PALOOZA (April, 12 artists, break-even economics) and ZAO-CHELLA (December, 10 artists, sponsorship-backed, social proof via @zaofestivals). Together, these demonstrate repeatable execution at scale (10-12 artists), venue partnerships, and audience growth.
Current Pipeline (2026). ZAOville confirmed for July with 86 RSVPs (86% of 100 confirmed attendees as of late May). ZAOstock October confirmed with distributed team active since April standups, partnerships announced, and budget sourcing underway.

What's Next
Near-term (Q3 2026). Execute ZAOville (July) as a proof-of-concept for outdoor and distributed-team production. Use it as a dry run for content capture and team workflows that will be applied at scale to ZAOstock. Finalize ZAOstock team rosters, confirm all venue and partner agreements, and lock in the artist lineup.
Medium-term (Q4 2026 onward). Execute ZAOstock October 3 with full livestream and POAP distribution. After close, transition ZAOstock into its own repository and operational structure (as stated in the ICM box). Begin planning 2027 festival calendar, including potential returns to Art Basel (December 2027) and NFT NYC (September 2027), plus new regional festivals.
Post-ZAOstock (2027+). ZAO Festivals becomes a self-sustaining production lane with an annual calendar of 2-4 events, recurring sponsors, and a dedicated ops team. Goal is for each festival to cover its own costs through sponsorship and on-chain settlement, and for the brand to be recognized within the broader crypto-culture calendar (on par with NFT NYC, Art Basel, and ETH Denver).
What We Don't Yet Know
Attendance Scaling. ZAO-CHELLA drew 100s of attendees in Miami; ZAOville is expected to draw 100s in DC. ZAOstock has no confirmed attendance yet; the goal is 250 total attendees[1] (per Zaal, 2026-07-09). Weather, venue capacity, and neighboring events (Maine Craft Weekend) could significantly impact both attendance and operational complexity.
Economics & Sponsorship. ZAO-CHELLA was student-sponsored ($LOANZ token); ZAO-PALOOZA broke even. ZAOstock's $5-25k budget range is wide. Actual sponsorship acquisition and attendee conversion (if ticket-gated) have not been tested at the planned scale. Artist payout models via 0xSplits are technically proven but have not been validated across a large and diverse artist roster in a single event.
Regional Expansion. The plan mentions potential returns to Art Basel and NFT NYC, and new regional events. The team's capacity to scale to multiple simultaneous events (or events in very different geographies) is untested.
Participating in ZAO Festivals
As an Artist. Apply through the ZAO community channels or reach out directly via Farcaster (/zao) or the team Twitter accounts (@zaofestivals, @bettercallzaal). ZAO-CHELLA and earlier events actively recruited artists from the broader Web3 music and creator network. Selection criteria typically include music quality, community alignment, and fit with the event's theme.
As a Sponsor or Partner. Contact Zaal or Candy (Finance lead) via Farcaster or email. ZAO festivals are open to corporate sponsors (impact-aligned Web3 projects, local businesses), nonprofits (Fractured Atlas model), and community fundraising (Giveth, Mirror). Sponsorship includes brand visibility, artist partnership opportunities, and potential equity in the event's on-chain settlement.
As a Volunteer or Crew. Email or DM the Operations lead (Zaal) or second (AttaBotty) via Farcaster. ZAOstock standups are ongoing (Tuesdays at 10am EST, as of April 2026). Volunteers get credited in POAPs and may receive small on-chain stipends from the festival budget.
As an Attendee. Follow @zaofestivals on Instagram and join the Farcaster /zao channel for announcements. Tickets and registration details are posted on thezao.xyz/events and the ZAO calendar (luma.com). Early attendees are eligible for POAPs and potential NFT collectibles.

Gaps & Non-Sourced Claims
The following claims have not yet been validated against external sources in the research library. They should be confirmed with the team before being relied upon for strategic decisions:
- ZAOstock Expected Attendance Scale. The goal of 250 total attendees was confirmed directly by Zaal (2026-07-09) but does not yet appear in written research library documents. This is a stated target, not yet a confirmed outcome.
- 2027 Festival Calendar Details. The whitepaper mentions potential returns to Art Basel (December 2027) and NFT NYC (September 2027), plus new regional events, but no formal roadmap with confirmed dates or venues exists yet. See section 6 (Roadmap & Scaling) for current public statements.
- Exact ZAOstock Lineup & Final Sponsors. As of publication date (2026-07-09), the artist lineup and final confirmed sponsors are still being finalized. The ZAOstock standups (ongoing, Tuesdays 10am EST per section 8) are the live source for updates.
- Economics Validation at Scale. Artist payout models via 0xSplits and sponsorship acquisition have been tested at smaller events (ZAO-CHELLA, ZAOville) but have not yet been validated across a large and diverse artist roster or at ZAOstock's planned attendance scale (250 attendees).
